Exploring Gawahon Eco-Park for the First Time

Gawahon Eco-Park at Victorias City

Recently, I found Gawahon Eco-Park in Victorias City, Negros Occidental, PH very interesting, and challenging when I visited it for the first time.

It is interesting for there are some living endangered animal and fowl species like Philippine hawk eagle, Negros cave hog, little golden-mantled flying fox, Visayan tarictic hornbill, spotted wood kingfisher, Visayan flower pecker, Negros bleeding heart pigeon, Visayan leopard cat n the forested area as reported by Mayor Francis Frederick P. Palanca.

And it is challenging for I had to overcome some difficulties in going up and down the hill where our campsite was situated. Since it was the venue of the 5-day 75th Diamond Jubilee Jamborette of Negros Occidental Council of Boy Scout of the Philippines, I had to bear it.

As a scout wood badge holder and the institutional head of our school, Balabag Elem. School, I had to attend to our boy scout delegates for their needs with the assistance of my two troop leaders.

A Developing City

Victorias City is 34 kilometers away from Bacolod, the capital city of Negros Occidental. It has 25 barangay.

Gawahon Eco-Park is a natural attraction about 800 meters above sea level with seven waterfalls, topped by primary growth forest which is part of the Northern Negros Natural park, the province’s largest watershed.

Its facilities include a two-room staff house, a one-room cottage and open shed houses, picnic cabanas and a boating lagoon.

Scouting Experience

My unforgettable experiences started to unfold. The said place hosted more than 6,000 boy scouts and troop leaders as registered attending. They came from the  Boy Scout councils all over the towns and cities of Negros Occidental.

A day before the formal opening of the jamborette, the camp site was heavily soaked by a whole day downpour, making the place muddy, slippery and not conducive for outdoor camping especially for the kids and for the inexperience outdoor campers.

However, in any scouting activities especially outdoor camping, it is not complete without rain. Veteran scouters, scouts are already used to that kind of inconveniences. Whatever matters, they've to survive. That’s the life of a true-blooded scout.

And I did overcome all those things.
